More Than Matchmaking

"Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, 'My daughter, shall I not seek
security for you, that it may be well with you?'" (Ruth 3:1, NASB95)

In Ruth chapter 3, we see a story that’s about much more than an ancient matchmaking scheme—it’s a vivid illustration of what it means to love God and love others with courage and intention. Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz each step out in faith, taking risks for the sake of someone else’s good, trusting God’s providence as they do so.
Naomi sets a plan in motion, not to manipulate circumstances for her own benefit, but to secure a future for Ruth. Ruth, in turn, chooses the path of loyalty and selflessness, boldly approaching Boaz in the night, not for her own advancement, but out of devotion to Naomi. Boaz responds with integrity, seeking not his own interests, but honoring Ruth and the spirit of God’s law.
Today, their story reminds us that loving God and others isn’t passive. It means taking initiative—acting with both wisdom and boldness—while trusting that God is at work behind the scenes. True faith engages the world with courage and kindness, accepting responsibility to partner with God in the unfolding of His providence.
May we, like Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz, live out our faith with bold love, confident that God’s hand is guiding every step.
