And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain;

the first things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4, NASB95).

James Tissot:The Resurrection

We all carry a longing for something more—a hunger for life that doesn’t end, for relationships that never break, for a world untouched by sorrow. This longing isn’t just wishful thinking; it’s woven into the very fabric of Scripture. From the very beginning, God designed us for life, not death.

In the opening chapters of Genesis, life was the default. Imagine Adam, newly formed, walking with God in a creation teeming with vibrancy. Death was an unknown—no withering leaves, no fallen sparrows. Even God’s warning to Adam about death must have seemed mysterious, like a shadow cast in the brightest sunlight.

Today, we live in a world where death is all too familiar. We feel the ache of loss and the sting of goodbye. Adam’s innocence is bittersweet for us because we know what it’s like to live under death’s shadow. Yet, that very ache points to a deeper truth: death was never meant to be part of our story.

But the story doesn’t end there. In the final chapters of Revelation, we glimpse the world as God always intended—a place where death, mourning, and pain are erased. The New Jerusalem rings with laughter, the river of life flows clear, and the tree of life never withers. For those of us used to fatigue and loss, this vision feels almost unreal—like waking from a long, heavy dream.

Yet, God’s voice breaks through: “Welcome to the new, old reality.” This is more than a fresh start; it’s the restoration of God’s original design. Death is not just avoided—it’s undone, and life reigns forever. That’s the hope the gospel holds out for us all.
